A recent discovery, American and possibly of South Carolina manufacture, a cast iron tilting kettle was embossed twice with a palmetto or sheaf of wheat and an SC and 1834, the lid also embossed with SC. The catalog mentions the South Carolina Manufacturing Co. of Spartanburg, which was in business from 1826 to 1850. The mark SC, alone, has been attributed to a Sheldon Cook, active in New England in the Eighteenth Century. Being a signed and dated piece of American cast iron hearthware in good condition, it achieved a strong result of $5,462, whatever its origins. The star of the sale was a fraktur cataloged as a stunning example by a very rare and elusive Southern folk artist. Attributed to the Wild Turkey artist, active 17701822 and dated 1819, made for Anna Magdelena Scherertz as her birth record, this superb example opened for bidding at $4,750. With a phone bidder against a floor bidder, it went for $27,600 to the gentleman standing at the back of the auction hall. A sweet Virginia folk art watercolor and pencil profile of a young woman, second quarter of the Nineteenth Century, brought $3,737.
